Essa-1 Draft

A biggest obstacle in my life was adapting school in U.S.A but I over came by going back to school. I was eleven years old when I moved to U.S.A. I landed in New York, John F. Kennedy airport at 10:30pm. Everything was looking strange, place, people even the roads.
After half hour later we reached to our new home, we had our dinner went to sleep. Next morning we drove to the city hall to get my admission for the school. The experience was something like this, they asked me my name looked at my birth certificate and informed us which school was close to us. The following day we go to the school by train. We exit the train station there was red big brick building if front of me, size of the building appear to me as big as my home town in India. We go to the main office when they took all our paper from city hall. For some reason I was placed in 6-1 grade, don’t ask me what that meant because I had no clue. I was in 4th grade in India due to the lack of English knowledge in me. In India they place you in English school based on your knowledge which made no sense. In U.S.A they place you in grade by your age, which made more sense, I kind of had an idea that I am being place in 6th grade but not sure what is 6-1 meant.
A south Indian girl was assign to me to show me around the school, who didn’t spoke my language but spoke Hindi but very limited. The only experience I had was just following her around. Weak later I find myself, staring at the black board, listing to bunch of gibberish. Four months later we moved to Chicago, Naperville where we moved in with my father’s friend. Who had two kids around my age, a boy name Edavin and girl name Priya. We brought the papers to the city hall again and they interview me and of course I didn’t spoke a word of English, only hello and how are you. This meant I couldn’t go to the same school as Adavin and Priya because there school didn’t offer ESL classes. There I was again in the same situation, didn’t learn much there either. The only advantage I had there was Adavin and Priya who helped me do my homework and thought me how to speak English but I was never able to write properly
Finally we moved to Boston there I was placed in ESL class, but for only 45 minutes of the day. Those 45 minutes was nothing but embarrassment because all the kids made fun of me whenever the teacher came to get me. Also I didn’t learn much from it because the teacher was teaching us the alphabets. Gradually I passed my elementary school, then to high school. That didn’t change much because based on my grade I was placed in all ESL class. What that meant was all the students that were in the class with me had the same back ground as I did. And the teacher would teach slowly and more detailed. Which helped out a lot, by then I was speaking English fine but still not able to write properly, it was because I wasn’t speaking properly either.
I guess if you study hard and just focus on passing the classed you can do it. Just like that I was able to pass all my classes with an “A” grade except in my English class, because I never learned how to write. After I graduate high school I was always afraid to come back to school because I didn’t had enough courage to face my own weakness in writing. Finally, I took the class with Professor Ralph Roche this summer at Bunker Hill. That is where I learned how to write and passed his class with “A” grade.
After getting a job at Mass General Hospital, made me realize how important it is have a college degree. In order for you to excel with your professional life it’s very important have proper education. Today I have my manger, my doctors and my husband supporting me to enhance my writing skills. The biggest obstacle doesn’t look that big anymore.

Group Activity

Many of you have probably heard the rule "Don't just show, tell, too!" Telling refers to summarizing. Showing refers to giving the reader concrete details that make the story come alive for her. Showing can be a very challenging part of retelling a personal experience.

Working with a partner, flip through Ch. 7 & 8 of The Help and look for sensory details. These are almost always an example of showing. Copy and paste this chart to one of your blogs and fill it in with examples.

Partner's Name: Nilofar Shaikh & Jessica Rogowicz

See

We see Aibileen was teaching Mae Mobley how to properly use the bathroom. We also see that Aibileen had to show her in her own bathroom.

Skeeter gets the call from Elaine Stein about writing the book and how she tries to convince her that she will get enough maids to talk about their jobs as maids.

Hear

We hear how Mrs. Leefolt reacted when Mae Mobley used Aibileen's bathroom and how she smacks the back of her legs and made her daughter cry.  We hear Aibileen's reaction when Skeeter attempts to pay her for helping with the Ms. Myrna letters.

Smell

Mrs. Leefolt got a perm and smells like pneumonia.

Taste

We taste the two glasses of grape juice Mae Mobley drinks before learning how to use the bathroom.

Outline

1.      A biggest obstacle in my life was adapting school in U.S. but I over came by going back to school.
·         I was eleven years old when I moved to U.S.A.
·         I only knew the alphabets because my schooling in India was in English; basically our entire text book was translated in English.
·         Teachers in India didn’t communicate in English with there students.
2.      I did not speak or understand English.
·         All the students picked on me and I couldn’t even defend my self. I couldn’t communicate with them.
·         My grammar and pronunciation gave me the most trouble.
·         I couldn’t write well.
·         When we had to do presentation, I couldn’t pronounce certain word.
·         Everyday in the afternoon the ESL teacher would come to my class to teach me the alphabets, which I already knew.
3.      I am in school now, in College writing I, doing an outline and hoping to get an A like my other class.
·         Took the placement test in the summer of 2012 at Bunker Hill Community College.
·         Placement test result placed me in writing and reading 095. I passed both of those classes with an “A” hoping to do the same with College writing I.

Think into the future about Mae Mobley. What do you think she will have to say about her childhood?

Think into the future about Mae Mobley. She will have lot to say about her childhood, because she was raised with love, emotional, and most importantly was confident. Aibileen loved her like it was her child, and never made her felt like she was not good enough. The love and affection that she never got from her mother will always bather her and just like Skeeter who is still searching for Constanteen, Mae Mobley will do the same.

In class writing

Compare and contrast Aibileen and Minny's relationship with Skeeter and Hilly's relationship.

Aibileen and Minny's relationship among them are like sister. They are always there for each other, for example when Aibileen's son passed away, Minny was there for Aibileen and like good friend she visited her everyday. Also made sure that she ate, and encourage her to move on in her life. When Minny lost her job, Aibileen helped her get the job at Celia. Also warned her from Hilly.
Hilly and Skeeter grew up with each other. They are best friends, but in a strange way because Hill is all about her self. She wants things her way only and she will make sure of it.

How have expectation of women have change?

Expectation for women are now different then what it use to be. Women now days are going to get there career. Getting married and having kids is on the bottom of there list. I also think it also depends on the individual because each one has goal and the environment they grew up in. Where I come from having career is not a bid deal as long as you have good job, but getting married and having kids is more important.

1. One of the central conflicts in this chapter is between Hilly and Skeeter. Using examples from the text, describe Hilly and Skeeter’s relationship. Then write about something similar (betrayal, growing apart, or disagreement) that you have experienced with a friend.

Hilly and Skeeter are best friends in the novel called “The Help“.  They are different from each other in so many ways.  Hilly has very controlling personality and she feels color of your skin determines how superior you are. For example, she wanted to pass a bill that required all white homes to build a separate bathroom for colored people. Skeeter does not agree with her and she threats her to terminate from the league. Then on the other hand Hilly tries to set Skeeter on a blind date with her friend because she does not want her to end up alone, after all they did grew up together.
Skeeter is a completely opposite person then Hilly. She is very down to earth and most importantly not racist. In fact she wants to change the society and help the colored people. She starts working for local news paper where she writes about cleaning tips, that’s where she begins interviewing Aibleen. She gets very attached to her because Aibleen reminds her of Constantine who took care of her when she was little. She never forgot Constantine because she left without meeting her. Since she came back from college she tries to get in touch with her but no one tells her anything.
I was in seventh grade when I first met my best ex-friend. She had just come from India and didn’t spoke English very well. I was appointed by my teacher to help her to show around the school. We both spoke the same native language but the only thing that separated us was our religion. Then later on she moved to different school because her parents decided to buy house in Waltham, where she met her boyfriend who was same religion as I am, I my self was also in a relationship but he was same religion as I was. We all got along very well, until one day my friend boyfriend tells me that we shouldn’t talk that much with each other because she thinks there something going on among us. My heart ached so much that I never had a best friend from that day on. My friend was such coward that she never confirmed me about it and I never question her either. We just grew apart. Today she and I are both married with kids and often do run in with each other, exchange few words and smile but the ache in my heart never went away.

The speech that author uses in the book sounds like the dialect the way African American were using around that time. It was everything that they did was different from the white people. The way they dress, and how they communicate with others. For example when they you all its spelled yall and when they said lord its spelled law.
